Gladstone Eyre appears to have been one of a family of Australian, English, and American painters. Davenports lists auction records to $14,500 for his works, no size stated. ADEC lists other sales at auction of smaller pieces than the one offered here in the low to mid thousands. We offer a wonderful painting we saw in a shop window on the south side of the Arno River in Florence. Our first thought when seeing this piece was that this was one of the prettiest sofa paintings we had ever seen, and indeed it is so. Its measurements are: 48 inches by 24 inches, the canvas; 58 1/2 inches by 34 1/2 inches, the frame.Restorations are practically or totally invisible and involve a very small percentage of the paintings surface, less than five percent, in not crucial areas. It has not been relined, and is on it's original stretchers. It is in an artist's frame, gilded, perhaps original to the piece.
