H.
L. SNYDAM
19th-century, American Sporting Action |

I find no listing in my sources
for this artist. What is offered here however, is very unusual piece of
early American Art. The painting, 21 inches by 17 inches, 31 1/2 inches
by 27 1/2 inches framed, is done on an advertising board dated 1871, and
by every indication of age is from that era. It was signed "H. L. Snydam",
bottom right. It is surely almost unique in that I would summize each
of these figures is actually a miniature portrait of the five men seen.
They were probably all hunting friends of the gentleman in the center.
I would speculate his wife recently had her portrait made, as was fashion
and those times by a portraitist who did those small paintings often referred
to as "on ivory", which were usually on celluloid, that were worn as cameos.
This painting was likely commissioned as something rare for that portrait
painter and rare in the Art world, a group portrait of five mid-19th-century
American sportsmen after the hunt. The artist, more familiar with small
faces than hunting attire or even full figures, rendered the faces in
the style of individual cameos, soft, almost photographic in nature. The
clothing animals and landscape was done in a more awkward but wonderful
naive style. The authenticity of the dress and hunting gear, including
the Civil War era military uniform of the figure kneeling to the viewer's
right is remarkable.

This painting is presented in a pine frame made recently for the piece. Only the slightest of imperfections (involving less than 1/10 of one percent of the surface) have been touched up. Its paper board has been deacidified and stabilized by my hand. Price, painting and frame: $4500 Purchase |
